About Icarus Films

Icarus Films has been a leading distributor of documentary films in North America since 1978. Led by longtime president Jonathan Miller, we work with independent producers worldwide, releasing twenty-five to fifty new (and classic) films a year, and now represent approximately 1,000 titles.

Each year we release six to eight films to theatrical audiences. Most recently, the premiere of the restoration of Patricio Guzman’s THE BATTLE OF CHILE, Wang Bing’s festival hit YOUTH (SPRING), and Greta Schiller & Andrea Weiss’ THE FIVE DEMANDS, about a forgotten student strike that changed the face of higher education forever.

In addition to its history of nontheatrical distribution, to colleges and universities — with over 900 of its titles now available for educational institutions on the platform Docuseek — Icarus Films has long offered many of its titles to individual consumers on home video DVD, and digitally.

And now (as we hope you’ve noticed) we’ve re-done and re-launched this website, so as offer almost our entire library, for individual, on-demand viewing.

We hope you will explore this new, expanded functionality and discover and watch for the first time perhaps, films across the breadth and depth of our work over forty-five years.

Icarus Films is proud to be active in traditional and new media, to work with new talent as well as “old masters.” We value meeting the needs of many different types of audiences, as well as challenging them (and programmers!), with original creative works.
